“O Magnum Mysterium” is a responsorial chant from the Matins of Christmas. This one was composed by Tomas Luis de Victoria (1548-1611). It was in his first Motets “Motecta que partim” in 1572. The music is numinous and magnificent.
English translation of the lyrics:
O great mystery,
and wonderful sacrament,
that animals should see the new-born Lord,
lying in a manger!
Blessed is the Virgin whose womb
was worthy to bear
Christ the Lord.
