Grieg composed 12 Melodies, Op. 33 for chorus, and then he arranged two of them for string orchestra, 2 Elegiac Melodies, Op. 34. It consists of No.1 Den Saerde (The Wounded Heart, originally Op.33-3) and No.2 Varen (Last Spring, originally Op.33-2). In the original lyrics, an old man asks himself “Is it the last spring for him?” in front of native beauty in spring. The music is very beautiful with melancholy.
