Berenice, Queen of Egypt, HWV 38 was composed by George Frideric Handel when he was in Italy in 1709. It is a love story of Berenice III, daughter of Ptolemy IX. The overture of the opera consists of the following four parts.
I. Introduction
II. Allegro
III. Andante, Larghetto
IV. Gigue
I and II are for four parts (Violin I/Oboe I, Violin II/Oboe II, Viola, Bass) and III and IV are for three parts (Violin/Oboe, Viola, Bass). III is a remarkable movement filled with a feeling of happiness.
